His Master’s Voice (HMV) was the name of a major British record label created in 1901 by The Gramophone Co. Ltd. The name was coined in 1899 after the title of a painting by Francis Barraud. The paitning features a dog named Nipper listening to a wind-up gramophone play a recording of his deceased master’s voice.
