The Pilar was author Ernest Hemingway™’s prized possession. The 38-foot hemingway pilar boat was built by the Wheeler Shipyard in 1934 and was named after a bullfight shrine Hemingway™ had visited in Zaragoza, Spain. The shrine is prominently mentioned in Hemingway™’s book For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Pilar is also said to be the nickname of Hemingway™’s second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. Hemingway™ purchased the boat in 1934 for $7,500. An avid sport fisherman, he did most of his fishing with Captain Gregorio Fuentes on the boat. Fuentes later served as inspiration for the fictional character in Hemingway™’s classic novel The Old Man and the Sea.
The Pilar was more than just a fishing boat for Hemingway™; it was a retreat where he fished, wrote, and connected with nature. It featured in his adventures off Key West and the Gulf Stream, where he pursued big game fish. During World War II, he used the Pilar to patrol for German U-boats in the Caribbean.
After Hemingway™’s death, the boat remained at his Finca Vigía estate in Cuba, where it was repainted from black to green. The Ernest hemingway boat symbolizes his deep relationship with the sea and his literary inspiration.
